Karachi Police: Chief seeks report over Defence assault video

Karachi Police chief Azad Khan has taken notice of a viral video showing uniformed officers allegedly failing to intervene during a violent altercation between two families in Defence’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari.

The police chief directed the relevant authorities to submit a detailed report on the alleged misconduct of the officers within three days.

Separately, DIG South Asad Raza summoned both parties and the officers allegedly involved to his office on Monday. Sources said the officers seen in the footage belonged to Korangi district, while details of the personnel were sought from SSP Korangi.

DIG South also ordered a forensic examination of the viral footage to establish what happened during the incident.

The CCTV footage appears to show a woman coming down the stairs of an apartment building with uniformed police officers while carrying a dumbbell. She then allegedly struck another woman several times outside a flat.

When the woman being attacked resisted, the officers appeared to restrain her and her companion instead of the alleged attacker. A plainclothes man was also seen taking an officer’s weapon and using it to damage a CCTV camera.

Noor ul Ain, who identified herself as one of the victims, alleged that the influential woman assaulted her and later had her and her brother arrested. A case was also registered against the siblings, who were subsequently granted bail.

The dispute reportedly began between two women living in an apartment building in DHA’s Khayaban-e-Bukhari before escalating into a physical confrontation. Noor ul Ain later shared footage of the incident on social media, where it quickly went viral. The affected family subsequently lodged a complaint at Darakhshan police station.

Resident Ali Ahsan said the family had lived in the building since November 2021. He alleged that a woman living on the fourth floor collected maintenance charges and that the family had paid its dues in advance.

According to Ahsan, the woman later cut off their water supply and damaged a water tank installed by the family. He also alleged that she threatened to disconnect their electricity.

Police authorities previously said the officers seen in the footage were not from South Zone and were believed to be from Korangi district. They also said the double-cabin vehicle visible in one of the videos was not a South Zone police vehicle.

DIG South confirmed that the alleged victims were a brother and sister who lived in the apartment with their mother. He said the inquiry would be conducted on merit.

The family has since vacated the apartment and moved to another location.
