National Action Plan should remain the foundation of Pakistan’s reform agenda, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Saturday. He urged Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to pursue structural reforms through Parliament and the federal cabinet instead of public forums. However, he stressed that Parliament and the cabinet were the proper forums for constitutional debate. He questioned why Naqvi discussed the issue before business leaders instead of presenting it to lawmakers and cabinet members. “If we want to strengthen the system, Parliament and the cabinet are the right forums,” Asif wrote on X. Parliament should lead reforms Asif said constitutional institutions would give any reform agenda greater legitimacy. He added that Naqvi is an important cabinet member and senator. However, he noted that the interior minister attends parliamentary and cabinet meetings only occasionally. The defence minister argued that bypassing these institutions weakens calls for reform. He also said Naqvi has held powerful positions for more than three years. Therefore, he could have launched discussions on governance reforms much earlier. National Action Plan remains a priority Referring to the recent DG ISPR briefing, Asif highlighted the implementation of the National Action Plan. He said the armed forces fulfilled the responsibility assigned to them through major sacrifices. However, he noted that the remaining 12 points fall under the Interior Ministry and still await implementation. Asif urged Naqvi to begin reforms by completing those outstanding commitments. He said the nation would support any genuine effort to strengthen state institutions. Rana Sanaullah criticises Naqvi Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah also criticised Naqvi during a public gathering in Jhelum Valley. He questioned the interior minister’s recent criticism of the governance system. Sanaullah said Naqvi had already served in powerful positions before calling for sweeping reforms.
