In his message on the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, observed annually on June 5, the Naval Chief emphasized the importance of global cooperation to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable future. This year’s theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action,” highlights the growing need to tackle environmental challenges through coordinated efforts at national, regional and international levels.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf noted that rising temperatures, sea-level rise, melting glaciers, severe floods, droughts and other extreme weather events continue to threaten millions of lives and damage ecosystems worldwide. He stressed that environmental protection is no longer solely an ecological issue but is closely linked to economic stability, food security, public health and sustainable development.
The Naval Chief pointed out that Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and faces significant environmental challenges, including coastal erosion, water scarcity, pollution and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. He said safeguarding natural resources and ecosystems has become a national responsibility requiring collective commitment and proactive measures.
Highlighting the global nature of climate change, Admiral Ashraf urged developed and developing nations to work together by sharing technology, resources and innovative solutions to mitigate environmental risks. He also emphasized the role of international organizations, educational institutions and local communities in raising awareness and promoting environmentally responsible behavior.
Reaffirming the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to environmental conservation, the Naval Chief said the service continues to support national efforts aimed at strengthening climate resilience and protecting the marine environment. He noted that the Pakistan Navy regularly conducts coastal, sea and beach cleaning campaigns, environmental awareness initiatives and community engagement programs to reduce marine pollution and preserve the ecological balance of the Arabian Sea.
A key focus of the Navy’s environmental efforts is the protection and restoration of mangrove forests along Pakistan’s coastline. Admiral Ashraf highlighted the critical role of mangroves in preventing coastal erosion, supporting marine biodiversity and absorbing carbon emissions that contribute to global warming.
In collaboration with government organizations, the Pakistan Navy continues to undertake large-scale mangrove plantation drives and coastal conservation projects to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen climate resilience.
Concluding his message, Admiral Naveed Ashraf urged citizens, institutions and stakeholders to adopt environmentally responsible practices. He said simple actions such as reducing untreated waste disposal into the sea, conserving energy, eliminating plastic pollution and protecting natural habitats can collectively make a significant difference.
“Together, let us answer this global call with unity and resolve, securing a green, resilient and prosperous Pakistan for generations to come,” he stated.
