Firefighter Mohammad Furqan, who died while rescuing people during the Gul Plaza fire, is set to receive the Tamgha-e-Shujaat in recognition of his courage and sacrifice. President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the Medal of Bravery for the late firefighter following efforts by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab to secure national recognition for his service. Furqan was among the firefighters responding to the massive blaze that engulfed Gul Plaza on M.A. Jinnah Road on January 17, 2026. He continued working to help rescue people trapped inside the building. During the operation, he fell into the wreckage and became trapped beneath the debris. He died while performing his duties. The national award recognises his courage and commitment to saving lives. Furqan had married around 18 months before the tragedy and had a child. The fire broke out on the night of January 17 and continued for approximately 36 hours before firefighters brought it under control on the morning of January 19. Furqan’s death highlighted the dangers firefighters face during major emergencies, particularly when they enter burning or structurally damaged buildings to rescue others.
