Producer Jerry Bruckheimer will also return for the upcoming sequel, which follows the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick. The screenplay is being written by Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote the 2022 hit.
Top Gun: Maverick became a global blockbuster, earning approximately $1.5 billion at the box office from a $170 million budget. The film was a sequel to the 1986 classic Top Gun, which first introduced Cruise as the daring pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
The 2022 film saw Maverick return as an instructor, training a new generation of pilots. The cast included Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jennifer Connelly and Jon Hamm, among others. Veteran actor Val Kilmer also made a cameo appearance in what became his final film role.
While the director for the third instalment has yet to be announced, the previous film was helmed by Joe Kosinski, while the original was directed by the late Tony Scott.
Further details about the storyline and release date of Top Gun 3 are expected to be revealed in the coming months.
