WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump marked the 250th anniversary of the United States on Saturday with a campaign-style speech that blended patriotic themes with political messaging, renewing calls for tighter voting laws and warning against what he described as the growing threat of communism.

After a delay of nearly two hours caused by severe weather, Trump addressed thousands gathered on the National Mall in Washington. He celebrated key moments in American history, including military victories, the Moon landing, the Wright brothers’ first flight and the country’s democratic system.

During his address, Trump urged Congress to pass legislation that would require proof of US citizenship to register to vote and limit the use of mail-in ballots. He also claimed his administration had “wiped out” Iran’s military while highlighting what he described as his administration’s achievements.

Visitors waited for hours to enter the event amid heightened security and temperatures that reached 102°F (39°C). The record-breaking heat prompted organisers to cancel several parades and outdoor events across the capital.

Among those attending was Glen Solander, a software engineer from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who said the long wait and extreme heat were simply “part of the deal” for those attending the celebrations.

The event also drew members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front, which announced its presence in Washington on social media. Hundreds of supporters wearing the group’s uniform travelled on Metro trains to the capital. Police said they received no reports of violence linked to the gathering.

Unlike previous presidents, who have generally kept a low profile during Independence Day celebrations, Trump has continued to combine official commemorations with campaign-style appearances.

The celebrations were organised by the Trump administration’s Freedom 250 initiative, which has largely replaced the nonpartisan commission established in 2016 to oversee the country’s 250th anniversary. The National Mall hosted a “Great American State Fair” featuring attractions, exhibitions by conservative organisations and displays from defence contractors.

Freedom 250 says the fair celebrates the people and innovations that have shaped the United States. However, several Democratic-led states declined to participate, while a number of scheduled performers withdrew, citing concerns that the celebrations had become politically partisan.

The programme also includes a faith rally featuring mainly conservative Christian speakers, sporting events and other activities under the Freedom 250 banner. Critics have also questioned the group’s “Freedom Trucks” exhibits, arguing that they present an overly religious interpretation of American history while downplaying issues such as slavery and racial injustice.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that most Americans believe the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations have become too political, including around three-quarters of Democrats and half of Republicans.

Ahead of the anniversary, the Trump administration carried out renovation projects across Washington, restoring several monuments and fountains. However, officials have faced criticism over delays and maintenance issues affecting the $15 million refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
