YouTube is introducing a Custom Feeds feature that gives users more control over video recommendations on its mobile app. The feature allows viewers to create personalised feeds based on their interests, content preferences and moods. According to a PhoneArena report published on October 24, users can describe the videos they want to watch rather than relying only on YouTube’s existing recommendation categories. The feature allows users to create feeds by entering prompts that explain their preferences. For example, someone looking to relax after work could request guided meditation videos lasting less than 10 minutes. Users can also create feeds around specific subjects or content formats, including smartphone advertisements. YouTube can add relevant videos to these feeds as new content becomes available. Unlike conventional keyword searches, Custom Feeds allow users to describe what they want in natural language, making it easier to discover content suited to their interests. They can then enter a prompt describing their preferred topics, video formats or mood, or choose from suggested prompts. Submitting the prompt creates the personalised feed. For example, a user could enter: “Help me unwind after work with guided meditations under 10 minutes in length.” The number of feeds users can save depends on their subscription. PhoneArena reports that users without YouTube Premium can save up to three custom feeds, while Premium subscribers can save up to eight. YouTube is also reportedly updating its mobile navigation. The changes include moving the Subscriptions feed to the top bar and adding shortcuts for Live and Music alongside Movies & TV. The report further says custom feeds are expected to synchronise across mobile devices and desktop computers, allowing users to access their personalised viewing preferences on different platforms. The changes reflect Google’s broader efforts to give viewers greater control over recommendations and make it easier to find videos that match their interests.
