AI Cybersecurity guide featuring five ways to protect personal data, online accounts and devices from AI hackers.AI Cybersecurity: Five essential ways to protect yourself from AI-powered hackers.

As artificial intelligence becomes an integral part of our lives and transforms the technology landscape, it also creates new cybersecurity risks, including increasingly sophisticated hacking attempts. Here are five essential ways to protect yourself from AI-powered cyber threats.

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords and a Password Manager

AI-powered tools can help attackers guess short or commonly used passwords more quickly. Create passwords that are at least 16 characters long, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Use a unique password for every website and account, and consider using a trusted password manager to store them securely.

2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Activate multi-factor authentication on your email, banking and social media accounts. Whenever possible, use an authenticator app or a physical security key instead of SMS text messages. This adds an extra layer of protection, making it harder for hackers to access your accounts even if they steal your password.

3. Turn On Automatic Software and Hardware Updates

AI-powered attackers can quickly scan the internet for software vulnerabilities. Enable automatic updates for your operating system, apps, web browsers and home router. Installing updates promptly helps close security gaps and protects your devices against known threats.

4. Independently Verify Urgent or Unexpected Messages

AI can make phishing emails, cloned voices and deepfake videos appear convincing. Be cautious of messages claiming that an account will be suspended immediately or that a family member urgently needs money. Pause before responding, and contact the person or organisation directly using a trusted phone number or official contact details to verify the request.

5. Limit the Sensitive Information You Share with AI Tools

Avoid entering confidential personal information, Social Security numbers or private company documents into public AI chatbots. Depending on the service and its settings, information you submit may be stored or processed. Review the platform’s privacy policy and data controls, and never share sensitive information unless you understand how it will be handled.
