Antoine Semenyo made an immediate impact at Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s side moved a step closer to the League Cup final with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Ghanaian winger, who completed a £65 million move from Bournemouth last week, opened the scoring and continued his impressive start at City after also netting on his debut in the FA Cup. Semenyo later saw a second goal controversially ruled out following a lengthy VAR review.
City absorbed early pressure from Newcastle, who came close through Yoane Wissa and Bruno Guimarães, but were denied by fine goalkeeping and the woodwork. The breakthrough came when Jeremy Doku surged down the flank and his cross was turned into Semenyo’s path, allowing the winger to score from close range.
Newcastle briefly celebrated a reprieve when Semenyo’s second was disallowed, but their relief was short-lived. In stoppage time, Rayan Cherki swept home a low cross to deliver a decisive second goal, giving City a commanding advantage heading into the second leg.
Newcastle, the defending League Cup champions, now face an uphill task in the return fixture scheduled for February 4, as City look to reach the final for the first time since 2021.
