During Rubio’s first official visit to India, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the two countries shared common interests across multiple sectors but highlighted concerns regarding challenges faced by legitimate travelers seeking US visas.
Jaishankar stressed that while both countries cooperate on tackling illegal migration, legal mobility should not be negatively affected by immigration policies. He noted that visa access remains important for technology cooperation and broader economic ties between the two countries.
The concerns come as the administration of Donald Trump has introduced tighter immigration measures and changes affecting work and residency pathways, including policies related to H-1B visas commonly used by skilled workers, particularly from India.
Responding to concerns, Rubio said the reforms were not directed at India specifically but were aimed at addressing broader migration challenges faced by the United States. He also emphasized the contributions immigrants have made to American society.
Despite differences over immigration, Rubio described India as one of the United States’ most important strategic partners, saying both countries remain aligned on major global issues and future challenges.
The discussions also reflected evolving geopolitical dynamics as both nations navigate issues involving trade, regional security and international partnerships.
