G7 leaders said on Wednesday that they stand united in support of Ukraine, including its territorial integrity. They also agreed to tighten sanctions on Russia, according to a joint statement released at the summit.

The statement came during the June 15–17 G7 summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France. Leaders emphasized Ukraine’s position in ongoing diplomatic efforts and its growing leverage in potential peace talks with Moscow.
Stronger Unity Despite Differences
The joint statement showed unusual unity, even as differences have occasionally emerged within the group. The US administration under President Donald Trump has at times taken a more cautious approach, especially on ending the war.
Trump called his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy “very good” on Tuesday. Following that meeting, optimism increased that progress toward a peace deal could be possible.
Zelenskiy later said he may meet Trump again during the summit.
Iran Deal and Energy Security
In addition, G7 leaders welcomed a preliminary US-Iran peace agreement that Trump signed ahead of the summit. They also said they will support its implementation.
They further committed to strengthening energy security. Therefore, they plan to diversify supply routes and reduce dependence on the Strait of Hormuz.
Focus on Critical Minerals and China
Meanwhile, leaders shifted attention to critical minerals and global trade imbalances. France, which holds the G7 presidency, pushed for coordinated measures to reduce reliance on China.
Officials said discussions included price support mechanisms, subsidies, and investment incentives for supply chains outside China.
China’s export controls on rare earth materials in recent years have raised concerns in Western economies. As a result, G7 members now seek to expand domestic processing and recycling capacity.
Global Trade Concerns
G7 leaders also examined global economic imbalances. French officials described the issue as China producing too much, the US consuming too much, and Europe investing too little.
The European Union has recorded its largest trade deficit with China in recent years, which has intensified policy debate within the bloc.
AI and Future Regulation
Additionally, leaders discussed artificial intelligence during a working lunch session. They focused on issues such as accountability, misinformation, and digital trust.
Industry leaders, including representatives from major AI companies, were expected to participate in the discussions.
