At least seven workers died and more than 70 others were hospitalised after an ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing facility in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
The incident took place in Tiruvallur district and triggered a large emergency response.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay confirmed the incident in a statement shared on social media.
Meanwhile, authorities moved quickly to contain the leak and assist affected workers.

Rescue Teams Launch Emergency Response
Disaster response teams reached the site soon after the leak was reported.
India’s National Disaster Response Force joined specialised chemical, biological and nuclear response units to carry out rescue operations.
In addition, officials deployed strict safety measures to control the situation and reduce further risks.
Emergency personnel also used specialised equipment to detect hazardous gas levels.
Workers Receive Medical Treatment
Health teams shifted affected workers to nearby hospitals for treatment.
According to officials, more than 70 people required medical care following exposure to the gas.
At the same time, emergency services continued monitoring conditions inside and around the factory.
Authorities also deployed a 30-member technical team equipped with gas detection devices and specialised rescue tools to stop the leak.
Leaders Express Condolences
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences after the incident.
In a message shared by his office, Modi said he was deeply saddened by the loss of life.
He also offered sympathy to families affected by the accident.
Meanwhile, police, disaster management officials, firefighters and health workers remained at the site as rescue efforts continued.
Authorities have not yet announced the cause of the leak and investigations are expected to continue.
