Argentina produced a stunning late comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 on Tuesday and book their place in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals.

The defending champions trailed 2-0 with just 11 minutes of normal time remaining. However, they scored three unanswered goals to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Enzo Fernandez struck the winning goal in stoppage time. Earlier, Cristian Romero and Lionel Messi had scored to erase Egypt’s two-goal advantage.

“We have a phenomenal group that never gives up,” Fernandez said. “We stay together through every difficult moment.”

Argentina will face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarter-finals on Saturday in Kansas City.

For much of the match, Egypt looked set to eliminate the defending champions. Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring before Mostafa Zico doubled the lead in the second half.

Egypt thought it had scored a third goal. However, a video review ruled out the effort, keeping Argentina in the contest.

Cristian Romero sparked the comeback with a header in the 79th minute. Four minutes later, Messi equalised with his eighth goal of the tournament and a record-extending 21st World Cup goal.

Fernandez then completed the comeback with a composed finish deep into stoppage time.

Argentina striker Julian Alvarez praised his team’s fighting spirit.

“The heart of Argentinians always keeps us going,” Alvarez said. “Even at 2-0 down, we believed we could still change the game.”

Messi appeared emotional after the final whistle as Argentina kept alive their hopes of retaining the World Cup title. The South American side is chasing its second consecutive World Cup crown after lifting the trophy in Qatar four years ago.
