Nick Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, has asked a Los Angeles court to release funds from a family trust. He says he needs the money to support his legal defence in a case linked to the deaths of his parents.

In a petition filed on Monday, Reiner’s attorneys argued that the trustees have refused to release payments he is entitled to receive under the trust. They claim the decision lacks valid legal justification.
According to the filing, the trust was designed to provide Reiner with scheduled payments at specific stages of his life. His legal team says the remaining funds are now urgently needed to cover legal expenses.
“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,” the petition states. It also notes that he remains presumed innocent and has the right to use resources legally owed to him for his defence.
Reiner, 32, faces charges in connection with the deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. Authorities found the couple stabbed to death at their Brentwood home on December 14.
He has pleaded not guilty to two murder charges.
Trust Dispute at Center of Court Filing
Court documents cited by the Associated Press state that prominent attorney Alan Jackson previously represented Reiner but later withdrew from the case.
The filing also says Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to help pay his legal fees. However, they later withdrew that support.
In addition, the petition claims the trust, managed by attorney Paul R. Kanin, holds at least $1.5 million. Its exact value has not been publicly confirmed.
Reiner’s legal team alleges that the trustee has provided different reasons for withholding payments, including concerns about Reiner’s mental capacity.
In a supporting declaration, Jackson stated that his firm may resume representation if the trust funds become available.
Reiner is scheduled to return to court in September for a pretrial hearing as the criminal case moves forward.
