PML-N PPP Talks: Coalition partners clash over unfulfilled promises

PML-N PPP Talks between Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders have highlighted growing differences within the coalition government despite efforts to improve coordination.

A PML-N delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar met provincial leaders of its coalition partner at Governor House Lahore in an attempt to ease tensions.

The meeting revived the coordination committee mechanism created to address PPP concerns in the province. However, the talks produced no significant breakthrough, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The session marked the first meeting between the PPP and PML-N coordination committees in nearly 18 months. The previous meeting took place in March 2025.

The two parties gave notably different accounts of the talks.

The PML-N described the meeting as positive and said relations between the coalition partners remained on track. The PPP, however, portrayed the discussions as tense and questioned the timing of the meeting.

PPP sources who attended the session said the party was not interested in a review of the PML-N’s progress on commitments related to its “due share”.

One PPP source said the PML-N could not return after nearly two years and present individual steps as evidence that it had fulfilled the party’s demands. The source argued that the pace of implementation remained too slow.

The PPP delegation instead outlined broader concerns raised by the party’s leadership and urged the PML-N to address those issues rather than focus on incremental progress on earlier agreements.

According to the PML-N, both sides expressed satisfaction with the implementation of decisions reached at their previous meeting. The parties also reaffirmed their commitment to continue cooperation in the national interest.

The PML-N said the meeting agreed to improve communication, strengthen political coordination and maintain regular consultations. The participants also reviewed cooperation between the coalition partners and discussed the implementation of earlier decisions and future steps.

PPP sources said Ishaq Dar told the meeting that PPP-nominated representatives had been included in district development committees. The PPP delegation, however, reportedly rejected what it viewed as piecemeal implementation of its agreements with the PML-N.

The PPP also raised concerns over alleged rigging in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and other issues highlighted by the party’s central leadership.

The meeting reportedly became tense when Ishaq Dar accused PPP leaders in Punjab of targeting the PML-N leadership.

PPP General Secretary Hasan Murtaza responded that the party had largely reacted to positions taken by the PML-N, leading to a heated exchange between representatives of the coalition partners.

Despite the disagreements, both parties agreed to continue consultations and resolve differences through dialogue, according to the PML-N’s account.
