According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the military practised raising units to the “highest levels of combat readiness” for the potential use of nuclear weapons.
The three-day exercise, which began on Tuesday, comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Western nations over the ongoing war in Ukraine and growing friction with NATO and Europe.
Russian authorities stated that the drills involve approximately 64,000 military personnel, more than 200 missile launchers, 140 aircraft, 73 surface ships and 13 submarines.
The exercises also include procedures related to tactical nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus.
Video footage released by the ministry showed nuclear units moving through forested areas in convoys, concealing military vehicles and preparing launch systems for operational deployment.
The exercise featured the use of the Iskander-M missile system, which can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads and has a range of up to 500 kilometres.
