Veteran Canadian actress and comedian Catherine O’Hara, best known for her iconic role as Moira Rose in the hit series Schitt’s Creek, passed away on Friday at the age of 71.

The news was confirmed by People Magazine through O’Hara’s representatives. According to a statement quoted by the BBC from Creative Artists Agency, the actress died peacefully at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness. No further details regarding the cause of death were disclosed.
O’Hara began her illustrious career with the Canadian sketch comedy show Second City Television (SCTV), where her exceptional performances earned her first Emmy Award. Decades later, she received her second Emmy for her portrayal of the eccentric and glamorous Moira Rose in Schitt’s Creek, a role that cemented her global popularity.
She also starred in several iconic films, including Beetlejuice (1988) alongside Michael Keaton, and the Home Alone series in the early 1990s opposite Macaulay Culkin, where she played the unforgettable role of Kevin’s mother.
Following the success of Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara continued her career with roles in major productions, including HBO’s The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, and Apple TV’s The Studio alongside Seth Rogen.
Born in Toronto, Canada, in 1954, Catherine O’Hara was the second youngest of seven siblings. She married production designer Bo Welch in 1992, who worked on Beetlejuice, and the couple had two sons, Mathew and Luke.
Her passing marks the end of a remarkable career that spanned over four decades, leaving behind a lasting legacy in television, film, and comedy.
