WhatsApp Introduces ‘Strict Account Settings’ to Boost User Protection Against Hackers

Meta’s WhatsApp has rolled out a new advanced security feature aimed at users who face heightened digital risks, joining other major U.S. technology firms in offering stronger protections at the cost of a more limited user experience.

The new option, called “Strict Account Settings,” began rolling out on Tuesday and appears as a one-click toggle in WhatsApp’s settings. Once enabled, it activates multiple defensive measures, including blocking media and attachments from unknown senders, disabling link previews, and silencing calls from unfamiliar contacts — all of which have been identified as common entry points for sophisticated cyberattacks.

In a blog post, WhatsApp said that while all conversations on the platform are already protected by end-to-end encryption, some users — such as journalists, activists and public figures — require additional safeguards against advanced surveillance and hacking threats.

Meta becomes the third major tech company to introduce an enhanced security mode for high-risk users. Apple launched its “Lockdown Mode” in 2022 for iPhone and macOS, offering extreme protection by limiting message attachments, link previews, FaceTime calls and certain web functions. Alphabet followed last year with Android’s “Advanced Protection Mode,” which restricts risky app downloads and tightens account security.

Cybersecurity experts welcomed WhatsApp’s move. John Scott-Railton of The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto described the feature as a significant step forward, saying it would help protect dissidents and civil society figures while encouraging other companies to strengthen their platforms.

“My hope is that others follow suit,” he said.
