Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and protecting constitutional supremacy. In his message on World Parliament Day, the prime minister said the constitution remains the foundation of democratic governance in Pakistan. He said sovereignty belongs to the people. He added that elected representatives exercise this authority as a public trust and work for citizens’ welfare. According to Shehbaz Sharif, parliament serves as the constitutional platform for legislation and public representation. He said lawmakers raise national issues and represent public interests through the parliamentary system. Furthermore, the prime minister said Pakistan’s parliamentary democracy has expanded participation and improved representation. He noted that women, minorities, smaller provinces and other underrepresented groups now have a stronger voice. He added that reserved seats in the National Assembly and Senate reflect constitutional commitments. At the same time, he said the Senate strengthens the federal structure by ensuring equal representation of federating units. Shehbaz Sharif also stressed that democracy depends on transparency and public engagement. Therefore, he said citizens must have access to information and opportunities to participate in decision-making. He added that parliament has introduced measures to improve access to legislation and parliamentary records. These measures also include committee reports, debates and official documents. Moreover, the prime minister said Pakistan’s parliament continues to strengthen its international role. He highlighted participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union and parliamentary friendship groups. He said these platforms promote dialogue, peace and international cooperation. In addition, they support sustainable development, human rights and gender equality. The prime minister said Pakistan remains committed to democratic values and responsive institutions.
