Iran began a week-long state funeral for its late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Friday, as thousands of mourners and foreign dignitaries gathered in Tehran to pay their respects. Clerics, senior officials and international delegations attended the ceremony following his death in February during US-Israeli airstrikes. Meanwhile, Iranian authorities planned funeral processions across several cities before burying Khamenei in Mashhad on Thursday. Officials said the coffin would travel to Qom in Iran before continuing to the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala for additional ceremonies. International delegations attend ceremony Several foreign delegations attended the funeral, including representatives from Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen and other countries. Furthermore, Pakistan sent a high-level delegation led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. Additionally, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani also arrived in Tehran with a separate delegation. Former Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also attended the funeral. Iran warns against renewed conflict Meanwhile, Iran tightened security across Tehran and warned the United States and Israel against any attacks during the funeral ceremonies. In addition, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran would respond if Washington and Israel failed to honour commitments under the recent ceasefire framework. At the same time, Acting Defence Minister Seyyed Majid Ibn Reza said Iran remained on full military alert despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. US-Iran talks to resume after funeral Qatari and Pakistani mediators confirmed that the next round of US-Iran negotiations would resume after the funeral ceremonies. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said talks with Tehran were progressing and expressed optimism about reaching an agreement.
