LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has called on the government to reduce petrol prices by Rs122 per litre instead of the recently announced Rs22 reduction, arguing that declining global oil prices should provide greater relief to consumers.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the petroleum levy should be abolished completely and urged the government to restore petrol prices to Rs250 per litre.
He proposed fixing the maximum petrol price at Rs250 per litre for the next two years, claiming that such a measure would boost economic activity, lower transportation costs, and help achieve government revenue targets through increased business activity.
The JI chief argued that the petroleum levy has become an additional burden on citizens and negatively impacts the broader economy. He said relying on the levy as a taxation tool places unnecessary pressure on consumers already facing high living costs.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also criticized the economic conditions linked to international lending requirements and said there was a need to reject demands imposed by the International Monetary Fund that, in his view, contribute to inflationary pressures.
He reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami would continue its campaign against inflation and rising prices, calling for policies aimed at providing immediate relief to the public.
