Saudi Arabia earned a valuable point after holding Uruguay to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group H match of the World Cup on Monday.

Abdulelah Al-Amri gave Saudi Arabia the lead in the 41st minute. Later, Maxi Araújo scored an equaliser in the 80th minute to rescue Uruguay.
Saudi Arabia Strike First
Saudi Arabia created one of the biggest moments of the first half despite limited possession.
Earlier, Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera denied Al-Amri from close range. However, Al-Amri responded moments later and converted a rebound after Muslera pushed away a header.
The goal sparked celebrations among Saudi supporters inside the stadium.
Uruguay Respond After Dominating Possession
Uruguay controlled most of the second half and created several scoring chances.
The pressure finally paid off when Araújo finished a rebound from close range to level the match.
Uruguay finished with 28 attempts on goal compared to Saudi Arabia’s seven.
Meanwhile, Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais delivered a strong performance and made several key saves.
He denied Federico Viñas in the first half and later stopped attempts from Manuel Ugarte and Federico Valverde.
Surprise Results Shape Group H
The draw completed an unexpected day in Group H.
Earlier, tournament debutants Cape Verde held Spain to a scoreless draw in Atlanta.
As a result, all four teams opened the tournament level on points.
The match also reflected football’s changing landscape.
Uruguay hosted the first FIFA World Cup in 1930 and will stage a centenary match in 2030. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is set to host the tournament in 2034.
Several high-profile figures attended the match, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino, NBA player Bam Adebayo, former NFL player Chad Ochocinco, and Uruguay legend Luis Suárez.
