The US-Iran conflict escalated early Monday as the United States launched several waves of airstrikes on Iran following an attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The weekend attack set the vessel on fire. Rescue teams continued searching for one missing crew member.

In response, Iran launched missile attacks targeting several countries across the Middle East.

Missile warning sirens sounded at dawn in Bahrain, which hosts the headquarters of the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet. However, officials did not immediately report any damage.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media confirmed fresh strikes on several locations across the country. It also reported that the attacks killed at least one person.

Iran’s attacks on Sunday targeted Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman. The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the escalating tensions.

The United States and Iran introduced the 60-day interim agreement to pave the way for negotiations on a permanent end to the conflict.

Instead, both sides have continued exchanging attacks. As a result, international concern has grown that the war could resume on a larger scale.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that a return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences.
