Sindh Minister for Labour, Human Resources and Social Protection Saeed Ghani said he would never compromise his integrity to keep political office. Government Plans Minimum Wage Increase in Federal Budget Speaking at the All Pakistan Women Workers Conference in Karachi, Ghani stated that holding public office was never his ultimate objective. According to him, principles matter more than political positions. Labour Reforms and Personal Journey Ghani said Sindh became the first province in Pakistan to formally recognise home-based workers. He described the move as an important step toward expanding labour protections. Reflecting on his personal life, the minister said his family experienced financial hardship. He recalled that his grandmother operated a small shop and worked hard to educate future generations. He credited much of his success to her sacrifices. At the same time, he noted that women workers today have more opportunities than earlier generations. The minister also acknowledged that cultural and social barriers continue to affect women’s progress. However, he said efforts remain focused on building a more inclusive society. Bribery Claim and Anti-Corruption Position During his address, Ghani revealed that someone offered him a monthly bribe of Rs50 million while he served as provincial Labour Adviser in 2016. Instead of accepting the offer, he transferred the individual to another position to remove official influence. Later, a court order limited his responsibilities and eventually led to his resignation. Ghani also claimed that corruption worth more than Rs20 billion occurred in institutions under his administration. He added that accountability efforts triggered significant pressure. Moreover, he argued that legal relief granted to transferred officials slowed reform initiatives and complicated accountability measures. Workers Rights and Welfare Initiatives Addressing labour issues, Ghani admitted that many workplaces still fail to implement minimum wage laws. Therefore, he urged workers to organise and report violations. He encouraged employees to reject jobs that offer less than the legal minimum wage of Rs40,000. The minister also highlighted social welfare programmes. In addition, he said government housing initiatives provide ownership rights to women. Regarding worker welfare, Ghani said social security registration for home-based workers continues despite administrative challenges.
