Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addresses the National Assembly on developments in Iran-US negotiations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed hope that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran would create a path towards a long-term and sustainable agreement.
Addressing the National Assembly, the prime minister referred to developments at the summit held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, where US and Iranian delegations held extensive talks. Pakistan and Qatar participated in the discussions as mediators.
Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan made sincere diplomatic efforts to help narrow differences between both sides. According to the prime minister, negotiations began on Sunday, continued late into the night and concluded after midnight on Monday.
He said a ceasefire had been established between Iran and the United States and that technical-level talks would continue over the next two months. The discussions will focus on Iran’s nuclear programme, ballistic missile capabilities, sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets.
The prime minister said Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement helped reduce regional tensions and reflected the country’s constructive role in supporting peace and stability.
He added that if negotiations continue successfully, the MoU could develop into a permanent and long-term agreement within 60 days.
Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation, parliament and opposition parties, describing Pakistan’s contribution to the talks as a significant diplomatic achievement that gained international recognition.
He also announced that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was expected to arrive in Pakistan later on Tuesday at Islamabad’s invitation. The visit is expected to include discussions on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, regional peace and other matters of mutual interest.
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with neighbouring countries and supporting initiatives aimed at regional stability and prosperity.
