Mourning processions marking the 9th of Muharram are taking place across Pakistan today as people commemorate the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala.

Authorities placed security forces on high alert across the country. Police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies are guarding procession routes in major cities.
Authorities also increased checks at entry and exit points. Security teams installed walk-through gates, activated CCTV surveillance and expanded monitoring at sensitive locations.
Meanwhile, city administrations introduced traffic diversion plans. Officials may also suspend mobile phone services in selected areas to support security operations.
In Lahore, organisers will start the main 9th Muharram procession from Pando Street in Islampura. Participants will follow the traditional route before concluding at Khaima-e-Sadaat Imambargah.
In Islamabad, organisers will lead the central procession from Imambargah G-6 Ithna Ashari. Authorities closed roads along the route to manage movement.
Meanwhile, organisers in Karachi will begin the main procession at 1pm from Nishtar Park after a majlis.
Allama Shehenshah Hussain Naqvi will address the gathering. Participants will then move through Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road and M.A. Jinnah Road before reaching Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.
In Multan, mourners will gather at Mumtazabad Imambargah before starting the central procession. Authorities are monitoring the route through CCTV systems.
Across Peshawar, organisers have planned multiple processions from different imambargahs.
Officials completed security and administrative preparations ahead of the events. Several major processions will continue throughout the day and into the evening.
In Quetta, organisers will take out the Shabeeh Zuljanah procession from Nasir-ul-Aza Imambargah.
Meanwhile, authorities suspended mobile phone services across the city. They also sealed roads and nearby streets with containers.
Authorities closed markets and shops located along the routes as a precaution.
Officials urged citizens to follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during procession timings. They said these measures will help maintain public safety and support security operations.
