In his message on World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, the prime minister highlighted the theme “Digital Lifelines: Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World,” stating that it aligns closely with Pakistan’s vision of becoming a digital nation through a stronger digital economy, society and government structure.
Sharif described the National AI Policy 2025 as a major initiative aimed at building a strong artificial intelligence ecosystem in the country. He also called the recent 5G spectrum auction an important milestone for improving telecommunications and internet services according to international standards.
He said the spectrum allocated to cellular operators has increased from 274 MHz to 754 MHz, while the government remains committed to accelerating 5G implementation, advancing the national fiberization policy and promoting local device manufacturing.
The prime minister stated that Pakistan’s digital infrastructure continues to expand rapidly, with more than 234,000 kilometres of fiber optic backbone, six submarine cables, around 58,000 cellular towers and over 20 modern data centres currently serving approximately 205 million subscribers.
Sharif further noted that Pakistan is emerging as a regional digital hub in South and Central Asia due to its expanding terrestrial and submarine connectivity network. He said the country is also participating in the development of the CAREC Digital Corridor with regional partners.
He added that Pakistan’s digital economy is showing strong growth, with annual IT exports reaching $3.8 billion, supported by initiatives such as DigiSkills, semiconductor workforce development programmes and a network of incubation centres.
The prime minister also highlighted Pakistan’s improved standing in international technology and cybersecurity indicators, saying the progress reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s digital capabilities.
